Day 21 National Poetry Month

Welcome to Poetry Friday, this week hosted by Karen Edmisten Here. Thank you, Karen for hosting!

For National Poetry month I’ve been stretching my haiku muscles and scouring the outdoors for ideas. I think writing everyday and posting has been good for my mental health. It feels meaningful.

I’ve been choosing to not rigidly follow the common 5-7-5 syllabic format as I always have in the past but just focus on the content involving nature and the seasons.

Today I noticed something new in my yard.

Lilac buds,
small many and dark purple--
each a promise.

I can’t wait to see what the next few days bring.

Happy Poetry Friday, and National Poetry Month! Thank you again, Karen, for hosting.

  1. Lovely. I like promises. You reminded me that I need to send pics of my lilacs to a family member. Thank you!

  2. Love the way you captured the promise of those lilac buds, Janice! I just noticed the other day that ours are budding too. Can’t wait for that promise to be fulfilled!

  3. My lilac bush needs tending to, Janice. I always loved the fresh perfume of lilacs. Since my bush is not growing fast, I have lilac hand wash and spray nearby. I have read through some of your haiku collection so keep them coming. Thanks for your Springsations offerings.

  4. I love that you take freedom in crafting your haiku, Janice. I’m studying various poetic forms this month and I learned that Zaddai is a variation of haiku/senryu – in that it does NOT insist on the 17-syllable rule, nor must it be season-focused. I’ll try one this month, too.

    1. I wrote historical haiku about each President a couple years ago. I followed the syllable rules but no seasonal word, and added a little info for each. Not sure what to do with them, but it was a fun project. You might like not worrying about syllables. I do.
