About Me and Salt City Verse

My name is Janice Scully. Welcome! I live in Upstate N.Y., but as a child I grew up downstate in a small town not far from New York City.  My four siblings and I lived upstairs over our family restaurant.  Besides writing, reading and all libraries, I love to create things with fabric and yarn. I also love good food.

This site is about poetry for young people. It’s named after where I live, near Syracuse, N.Y. It used to be called the salt city because salt water bubbled up from the ground, sort of like where poems come from, somewhere deep. I hope to share my favorite poets and poems.

About me and Salt City Verse

Welcome! My name is Janice Scully and I write for young people. I live near Syracuse, N.Y. which used to be known as Salt City. Salt water, once used to make valuable salt, bubbled up from the ground here, in a way, like poems bubble up from deep places. Here you will find posts about my favorite poets and poems.

I love reading, books, and all libraries. I also love fabric, yarn and food. The later, no doubt, comes from living as a child over my family’s busy restaurant.

I am a physician, but in 2010 earned an MFA in Writing for Children from Vermont College. I am grateful for the faculty and friends I met there and now focus on writing and supporting children’s literature.
