Welcome to Poetry Friday, this week hosted by Matt Here. Thank you, Matt for hosting! Be sure to check out what he has for us this week.
It’s starting to look a lot like Halloween, and I’ve begun thinking about an anticipating witches and brooms.. On my computer, I have several versions of a poem inspired by a hard-working porch broom that, in autumn, was especially busy what with everything “falling.” As you can tell, it is an epistolary poem.
DEAR PORCH BROOM, on Halloween Morning Fallen acorns twigs and leaves sticky spider webs tired old moths. Patient and tall, you sweep them all. Praying Mantis says he’s grateful you let him be, and thank you for not chasing me. So have a spooky night off! Your Friend, Squirrel ©Janice Scully 2022
Happy fall. Have a great weekend.
Janice, this made me smile. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Love the POV of the poem – I’ve always wondered what squirrels think about things like that!
I think my grandgirls would love this poem, Janice. Finding out that the epistolary poem was written by a squirrel is delightful.
Ah, you really caught me with that ending, Janice. It’s very fun! I sweep a lot during this time of year, too! Now I’ll think about having a conversation!
This is delightful, Janice. I smiled at the unexpected sender 🙂
Love it –and that it’s from squirrel. ‘Patient and tall’ is such a great perspective.
This poem is full of delightful surprises! The POV, most of all!!
Aww… I may need to suggest an epistolary prompt for the Nevermores next round! Thanks!
I have a special home-made broom that I like to use for Halloween. I wonder what the squirrel would have to say about my broom’s red bristles. You have encouraged me to write that poem! I like “Patient and tall, you sweep them all.” Thanks, Janice. This was a lot of fun!
“Patient and tall,
you sweep them all.”
😊😊😊😊
I love Squirrel’s presumption, that THEY can give Porch Broom a night off!
Nice one, Janice…who else on the porch has something to say about Halloween night?
So cute! I’d never pondered the relationship between a porch broom and a squirrel. Delightful!
