Rocks and Socks

Welcome to the last Poetry Friday of 2022, this week hosted by poet Patricia Franz Here. Thank you for hosting, Patricia! Make sure you check in and see what Patricia has for us this week!

Because of a car trip to our relatives, and idle time in a car, I have been knitting a pair of socks. Because it’s small, a sock project is easy to bring along. What does this have to do with poetry?

One down, one to go.

A year ago, I was thinking of possible writing projects and considered using pairs of words that rhymed. Socks and rocks were two of the words I thought of. What did they have in common? Was there a poem there?

Would these two rhyming words yield humor? I had no idea if anyone but me would see opportunity here. Anyway, about rocks and socks I came up with a poem. I revised my initial attempt and like it better. I hope we all find ideas to inspire us over this new year.

ROCKS and SOCKS

Two words rhyme,
four letters the same.

Rocks--hard,
scattered on beaches and trails,
spewed from volcanoes
in a hot molten blurs.
I wonder:
What is Earth made of?
What are fossils?

Socks-- soft.
Who invented them?

Perhaps the first knitter
walked on rocks
stole four letters
and made two socks.

Happy New Year! Until at least April, I wish you all a sturdy pair of socks. Thank you Patricia for hosting!

  1. Love your knitted sock, Janice — and musings on rocks and socks. I giggled a bit on the connection: my boys use to collect rocks and would store them in old tube socks in their dresser drawer! But yours are so beautiful! Who will be the lucky wearer? Happy New Year!

  2. Hahaha-this is clever, Janice. And also I love your wondering, and the contrast between those molten blurs and one wily person who began creating softness (even though it started with theft!). Happy New Year!

  3. One thing I enjoy about long car rides is the time to think–or knit! I always carry a notebook for random thoughts, and looking out a car window provides plenty of opportunities to think about and play around with pairs of rhyming words. I enjoy the way your wondering evolved into a poem. Happy New Year!

  4. Fabulous! I think you’ve got a great idea for a series of poems. This is 😄 . Keep going!

  5. Your poem made me laugh out loud. I think it’s lovely that you bring along a wee knitting project on car trips. Except that I cannot yet reliably turn a heel (ughhhhhh) that seems like a great idea! Happy New Year.

  6. Ha! But first, your socks are lovely. I love the yarn colors, Janice! “Necessity is the mother of invention.” for sure, hence that invention of socks, after rocks–pure need! Happy New Year full of more discoveries!

  7. Janice, I love your musing from both a historical and artistic point of view. As I read, I thought of pioneers women leaving their comfy homes to transverse rocks and knit socks. Your socks will have memories for lucky wearers. The colors you used are lovely. There is much creativity in your blog so keep on pondering.

  8. Fun poem Janice, I like all the questions, pondering and your playful last stanza makes me smile–and what a nice sock you have there. Hope you have a joyful New Year, thanks!
