Welcome to Poetry Friday! This week we are hosted by the clever Bridget Magee HERE. This week she has been posting a different poem by a different poet from her anthology: 10*10: Poetry Anthology Celebrating 10 in 10 Different Ways. It’s been great reading such wonderful poems for kids, many from Poetry Friday friends.

Halloween is on my mind. I particularly love that on this holiday, dreadful things that visit and scare the daylights out of you, simply disappear the next day. Like these scary dudes, who once on a Halloween night pretended to be my children.

Gone! Whoosh! They disappeared on November first.
What an emotionally satisfying holiday and I have never, ever, appreciated Halloween more than I do this year! Maybe others feel this, too.
And as usual in Central New York, the pumpkins are amazing. Who could resist smiling in the midst of such a frightful holiday when standing amongst hundreds of bright orange pumpkins?

So, next weekend I anticipate the knocks on my door and the trail of dreadful visitors, anticipating the relief I know I will feel on November 1st when they are gone.

Have a great week! And thank you Bridget for hosting!
What a fun Halloween poem Janice, I love your rhythm and anticipation! Lovely pic of that pumpkin patch too, and your children ready for Halloween, thanks for all!
I’m a Halloween person, too, Janice. I love your poem, from “bare trees” to sleepless anticipation. I especially like the pics of your sons when they were young. I made costumes for my girls when they were growing up, but they never went for the spooky. Usually it was a combo costumes like puppy-ballerina or turtle-pumpkins because they couldn’t settle on one idea! 🙂
Truly delightful poem!! Your enthusiasm is infectious. Love the photos of your scary children. 😀
Aw, that’s fun, Janice! Love the kids–and I also really like how the last stanza has a different meter and feel. And those rhyming last lines of the first three stanzas. Nice!
I love Halloween, too, Janice. Your poem shows the excitement you feel for this holiday! Though I don’t purchase much anymore, I still love walking the aisles of all the Halloween things at Target. And, I get to be at the bookstore this year on Halloween. I’ll give out treats and enjoy every bit!
I always wonder if the ghosts and goblins wake up on Nov 1st with a Halloween hangover – jealous of the merry-making that begins when so many turn their attention to preparations for Christmas!
What a fun poem! I love how it transitions from being a list poem to that final stanza, when so much is revealed about the speaker!
Your delight in Halloween is catching, Janice! It’s a fun poem indeed–careen/Halloween!
