NATIONAL POETRY MONTH: A CHERITA

Welcome to Poetry Friday. This week the talented poet Matt Esenwine is hosting HERE. I can’t wait to read his new anthology, A Universe of Rainbows! Congratulations! The cover is gorgeous!

I am so impressed by the poetry projects that so many are doing this month! I love the Progressive Poem and am waiting for my turn. I am also soaking up the ideas I learn from Poetry Friday poets. Thank you all.

What a great poster! Yes! I want to live in a shared world. For me there is no alternative. If we want to live in a shared world, we have to speak up!

This week I wrote a Cherita.

What is a Cherita? It is a poetry form described HERE. A cherita has three stanzas and it tells a story.

CHANGE IN AMERICA

Good change comes slowly,

inspired by the will
of the people. But keep watch!

If change is sudden and requires flashlights
on Friday night, in dark buildings,
suspect thieves.

There are signs that America is waking up. I hope so. I will take pictures at the demonstrations on Saturday in Syracuse. Thank you Matt for hosting.

  1. Indeed, there’s good change, and then there’s – whatever we’re dealing with. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I’m glad you are writing and sharing about this important topic. Your last stanza is a powerful and chilling metaphor.

And thank you for introducing me to both the cherita, which I look forward to trying, and this year’s National Poetry Month poster–what a beautiful, timely message.

  3. We are having peaceful protests here on Saturday, too. I’m feeling pretty down and helpless about the thieves.

  4. Thank you for the important message, Janice. I love the cherita form – using it for my April Poetry project. Thank you also for your activism.

  5. I made plans for Saturday with a friend…but I will stop at a protest on my way and shout a little! The resistance is growing. Finally! Thank you for your cherita. I love your mention of Friday night. So many things are done on a Friday night as if they can be covered up!

  6. Hi Janice,
Yes! There are signs America is waking up! Congress especially needs to get its act together, I feel. Hopefully, the demonstrations this weekend will help them realize that what is going on is not what the people want. I hope they listen and change begins. I’ll have to give a cherita a try. Thanks.

    1. Thanks! BTW I โ€˜m reading One Step Forward and love it, especially how youโ€™ve placed your main character in the midst of the action right away. Such an interesting bit of history!

  7. Oh, yes, Janice! Your cherita is spot on and brings such hope! “Good change comes slowly, / inspired by the will / of the people.” Yes, indeed! The thieves in the dark will be exposed to the light eventually.

  8. ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ’• Hooray for your truth-telling poem, Janice!

We went to the Torrance, CA city hall …there were 10,000+ attendees!!!! The energy was SO freaking wonderful ~ these events are inspiring & community-building. And some of the signs were hilarious!
