OUR CAPABLE COUNTRY

Welcome to Poetry Friday, hosted by thee capable and prolific Matt Forrest Esenwine Here. Thank you, Matt for hosting!

I simply have a short poem to share. It was inspired by the climate summit. Thank you to all the heroes who attended to work on the climate crisis.

I have always been optimistic that there are people in the world with the tools necessary to avert a catastrophe. So, when I think of the trouble we’re in, I think about past and it gives me hope.

OUR CAPABLE COUNTRY

In the past 200 years:

We have cured terrible disease.
We have inspired democracy.
We have walked the moon.
We have defeated dictators.

We have ended slavery.
We have inspired children to learn.
We have rescued boys trapped in caves.
We have fed the famished.

We have respected those different than us.
We have loved our neighbors.

We have erected the statue of liberty
We have built twin towers.

If we want to, we can save planet.

  1. We are, indeed, capable of so much, Janice! Thanks for this positive poem of hope.

  2. I heard some of the final words from Scotland today, Janice, & they call for many things, but most of all, action! Talk indeed is cheap. I love your list of what we are capable of, now for next!

  3. Thank you Janice! I saw an article at the beginning of hte pandemic that said “What if we treated Climate Change like COVID-19”. The point of the article is that we (eventually) took direct and major action to try and address COVID-19, so why not do the same for Climate Change. It was a good (but somewhat depressing) read.

Thank you for sharing your poem.

  4. It’s so hard to keep plugging away with the small things I can do when if the world leaders would take bold action we could get this runaway train under control. Thank you for reminding me to stay optimistic!

  5. Janice, I love the title “Our Capable Country.” Yes, I pray that many people will carry the torch to victory of saving the planet, one of the most important accomplishments for the future.

  6. Janice, thank you. Yes, we have a capable country. We see and your poem notes that it’s no longer a question of ABLE TO; it’s a question of WANT TO–and if the right powerful people don’t want to, right now, we are in trouble.

  7. Your poem need to be sent to the people at the Summit. All the policy makers. We must act.

  8. Yes, “let’s want to” “save planet.” Powerful poem Janice, and I like your idea of reflecting on what we have accomplished in the past to help us in this overwhelming present dilemma, thanks!
